If you are a cat owner or a young woman I would avoid this practice. This is the practice I grew up going to, before Dr. Sheard worked there. When I went recently with my cat who had developed a large tumor I had terrible experience with Dr. Sheard. As soon as we got into the room, he explained that he has a "love hate relationship with cats," and wouldn't own one himself. This was unprofessional. I don't care how he feels about cats personally, my pet was ill and I needed help. He didn't even run a blood test. He aspirated the tumor, and when the results came back inconclusive he insisted on surgery the upcoming week. I explained that my cat is older, and FIV positive, and I did not feel comfortable rushing into surgery without discussing options. He refused to recommend any course of action other than surgery. His emails to me were deeply condescending and unprofessional. It was impossible to get in touch with him to discuss any option other than surgery. I am sure he was talking down to me and refusing to give me appropriate information because I am a young woman. Due to this, I left the practice, and went to Companion Animal hospital. The vet there was incredible. She actually ran a blood test. She showed me slides of the aspiration so I could understand what we were dealing with. She agreed that the tumor was much too large to operate on safely, and so we started my cat on a dose of prednisone. And the tumor is gone. Not reduced, gone. Dr. Sheard was going to cut open my cat when a kinder, more humane course of care was to use medication to address the issue and let an older animal remain pain free. I believe this experience was malpractice at best. Disturbing, unprofessional, condescending, and incorrect medical advise. This used to be a wonderful practice, but I would never return here again.

Best Vet in the grand traverse and leelanau area. I’ve taken all my dogs here. The staff cares about your animals probably as much as you do if not more. This is the only place I will board my dog as well. They are great.

They always give the best of the best when it comes to the sincere caring about the animals!! High quality individuals all throughout both the Suttons Bay & Elk Rapids Animal Hospitals. I have experienced other vet offices over the years & there is NO comparison with the quality of service from start to finish when you walk into either the Suttons Bay or Elk Rapids Animal Hospitals!

The drs and staff are so compassionate and competent... it's nice to know that the kind of care they offer is second only to MSU in my opinion! Was very grateful for dr. Cochran for her knowledge on my pets breed and congenital issues. We managed well as a team! love them all!

Dr Cochran and her staff were so caring w/our Milo when he was in with Parvovirus some 14 years ago, we didn’t hesitate when we got our new puppy Luna and needed a vet for her care. She was as kind as thorough as she was back “in the day.” I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services!

I would give them 20 stars if I could. Dr. Sheard has been treating our sweet pup for lymphoma. We know how this is going to go but he has been right there and has gone so far above and beyond I only wish he treated humans. Thank you John.

I trust the doctors here. They are great and are great with my dog. They take time with her so she is comfortable. There are several pet hospitals closer to my home but I know she will be well cared for. My dog has seen 3 of the doctors there and they are all gentle and compassionate with her.

For over 20 years all of our companion animals have received the best care from every doctor and staff member at Suttons Bay Animal Hospital. As a licensed wildlife rehabilitator my wildlife babies have also received the very best care. I always chuckled when I would see a multitude of faces watching from the back area through the 2-way glass in the door to the exam room. Everyone wanted to see the various babies, but knew that they would be frightened if they were in the room. The care, compassion, knowledge and concern of every doctor and staff member is without equal.

From Our Website

Suttons Bay Animal Hospital began as a part-time satellite clinic of the Animal Medical Center of Traverse City. Seeing a need for a full-service clinic in the growing community, Dr. Charles E. Morrison bought the Animal Medical Center of Traverse City in 1997 and opened it as Suttons Bay Animal Hospital. After practicing as a sole practitioner for three years, steady growth allowed him to expand his staff. In 2002, we opened our 4,400 square-foot facility located one mile south of Suttons Bay.

Cold laser therapy is medication-free therapy that is being used to treat a myriad of conditions in veterinary and human medicine. Theoretically, we believe that it works by activating photosensitive molecules in cell's mitochondria to increase energy output. This increase in energy output allows the cell to perform whatever the cell does better. Although much of the research for many conditions is ongoing, it is well documented to aid in wound healing through increasing cell proliferation and in decreasing pain for musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis.
