We have offer Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery in Dogs and Cats since 2006. The "Love" Spay (laparoscopic-ovariectomy) is the safest and less painful way of altering your female dog or cat. The laparoscopic Assisted Gastropexy is the best way of preventing the deadly 'bloating(Gastric Dilation Volvulus) in giant dog breeds.
We use the new technology of ultrasonic surgery (Harmonic Scalpel is a trademark of ETHICON) in all our surgical procedures. In recent years veterinarians have offered minimally invasive ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy with the use of electrosurgical units. We are the first hospital in Southern California performing the entire procedure laparoscopically using the same ultrasonic devices used by surgeons in humans.
At Portola Plaza Veterinary Hospital, you can expect state of the art medical care for your pet. We believe in nurturing the human-pet bond and creating a harmonious relationship between people and pets. You can expect to be greeted by a courteous receptionist, clean exam rooms, friendly doctors, and caring technicians.
Very small incisions (5 mm) are made on the patient to introduce a small scope connected to a camera. The surgeon uses small instruments to perform the surgical procedure while visualizing the patients abdomen or thorax. This eliminates mistakes due to poor visibility of the operating field. With the help of the Ultrasonic Surgical Devise the bleeding is reduced to zero.
Rupture of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in the knee is the most Orthopedic Injury in the Dog. During weight bearing, the femur slides down the tibial plateau. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) acts against this downward force. Dogs having a more steep slope are more predisposed to rupturing the ACL.

Dr. Rodriguez took care of my cat, Mr. Wiggles, for the last seven years of his life. When the end time arrived, due to kidney failure, he and every member of the staff were so very kind and compassionate. It made letting go slightly less difficult. I appreciated that so much.

Dr. Rodriguez and his team are the best! You can tell that they're passionate about their jobs and the animals they work with. As a new puppy owner we felt very welcomed and safe to leave our baby in their hands! 10/10 recommend!

Dr. Rodriguez is great and the staff is friendly. They are good to my pets and very gentle and caring. No pressure for expensive treatments and tests, just honest advice. The exam cost is high but not outrageous for the area. I am usually able to get an appointment next day.

This was our very first experience at a vet. We were a little nervous but I remembered how friendly the person on the phone was. We were greeted right away upon entering and everyone else there was so nice. I was surprised but super happy that we could get in so soon to take care of our kitten seeing as it is our first time as pet owners. I would definitely recommend this vet to anyone that asks.

Rodriguez once was a satisfactory vet many years ago but in my opinion due to a lack of proper recurrent education & training, a postage stamp of a veterinary office & the most up-to-date & safest medical procedures, he lacks the skills nor the patience to ensure that your pet is provided a minimally decent chance of survival. My beloved pet Oscar who was misdiagnosed & given the wrong R/X for several years eventually caused permanent blindness...God Rest His Soul 🐶

First of all. they were recommended by my boss. Thank you for that! From there. it's just amazingly positive! He's a caring knowledgeable vet, not in it for the money. You can just tell in so many ways that he's the best for your pet. I'm so blessed to have him for my Snowbear

My dog was mauled by another dog at a groomer! I took my dog to this Vet (it was the Vet of the dog who bit my dog), and they were AMAZING. Treated me with respect and genuinely cared for my dog. They were fantastic as well about communicating with the owner of the other dog. I now bring my dog to this vet for our regular visits!

I have been taking my two cocker spaniels to see Dr Rodriguez for 7 years since they were puppies, and he is truly one of the best Vets I have ever dealt with. He is so loving and sincerely cares about my dogs every time we see him! He once took the time to get on the phone to explain in detail what he had found and what needed to be done to put my mind at ease. I truly appreciate him and I know he loves animals and what he does is more than just a job, it is his calling.

Listen up people. If you found this place, no need looking farther. Dr Rodriguez is the best. He took one look at my little girl's lump, he knew exactly what it was right away. He said that was hernia. I knew he was right, because I've done research. I had him operate on my little girl and I got to take her home on the same day. I started seeing signs of recovery within a couple of days. Dr Rodriguez is worth driving or flying for.

My little girl is back to normal. Thank you Dr Rodriguez! I highly recommend you. You are truly good with what you do. I'll continue having dogs as long as you're still in business.

Had nothing but good experience with Dr. Rodriguez & team with our sickly rescued kitty Pepe. Pepe had FIV and a number of other respiratory problems his whole short life. I liked that they could do surgery, X-rays and blood tests right there. Also, Dr seemed to know as much about FIV (like human HIV) complications as the high priced specialists in Tustin that we took him to. Our little guy only lived 5 years but I think it was a great 5 years that he would not have had without Dr. Rodriguez’s help.

On January 15 I took my 4 month old puppy into get her vaccinated with Dr. Rodriguez, I made a special appointment to sit down and discuss with him my concerns about vaccinating her because she had a allergic reaction to her last vaccine, I even asked if he could separate the vaccines and he told me no, but he said he can give her a shot of Benadryl before he vaccinate her and that would stop any allergic reactions.

The next day which was Saturday the 16th my puppy was very lethargic and could not hold down her food and had diarrhea, we took her to urgent care and they could not figure out what was wrong with her, we found a new Vet that has been taking care of Gracie and treating her every day with IV fluids steroids antibiotics and her improvement has been very slow, she even mentioned to us that she thinks that Gracie needs 24 hour care, so we took Gracie to a specialist at the BluePearl, she is being hospitalized we are not sure if she's going to make it, all because Dr. Rodriguez did not listen to me or take my concerns seriously.

The vet at blue pearl said it was definitely due to the vaccine. we are heartbroken and sick to our stomach that this happened to our sweet puppy Gracie praying that she will recover from this horrible allergic reaction from the vaccine that she is suffering from. the illness is called Vaccinosis. Our hospital vet bills are up to $11,000 right now

Our love for Dr. Rodriguez and his staff started almost immediately after getting our first dog, Patches. Patch needed Knee surgery, other vets wanted to completely replace the joint, but so many people told us about Dr. Rodriguez and his practice that we couldn't do anything without seeing him first. Rodriguez walked us through what was causing our baby pain and suggested a MUCH less invasive procedure to take care of it. Patch's recovery was quick and he has been mistaken for a puppy ever since (he's 10 now).

I don't know if I could ever trust another veterinary practice as much as I trust the team at Portola. Over the years, the entire team is consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do.

Although my circumstances for seeing Dr. Rodriguez wasn't the best. He is the most honest trustworthy veterinarian I have been to. My dog Chiquita was diagnosed with kidney failure by another location. They wanted to charge 5 times times the amount of Dr. Rodriguez offered for IV Fluid Therapy. He looked more into her than just the blood results and found out she had cancer which caused the kidney failure.

I doubt any other vet would have taken the time to do a thorough look into making sure he could help my dog. Although she will pass soon, I recommend all other people to go to Dr. Rodriguez in any situation for your pet.

I had a cat emergency this morning, my other vet was unavailable but Portola got me in early and were very responsive in getting my baby relief once we figured out what was wrong with him. Dr. Rodriguez also informed me that a previous vet had given us wrong information which lead to this issue again, he has given me a new solution which will hopefully prevent it happening anymore. I'm also a small business owner affected by COVID19 and Dr. Rodriguez helped me out a bunch on the price to ease my financial stress. Highly recommend them.

I am so thankful for Dr. Rodriguez and his team. My 10 week old puppy got sick and we knew she needed to be seen as soon as possible. Dr. Rodriguez' staff was able to get her seen within 2 hours of my call. They provided excellent care for my puppy. They ran an in house fecal test which gave us results within 10 minutes. They then placed her on antibiotics and kept her the entire day and overnight for no extra charge. They even called us periodically to let us know how she is doing. They are very caring and affordable. I highly recommend using Dr. Rodriguez as your primary veterinarian.

I trust Dr. Rodriguez with my pet, and I will never look for another Vet so long as he continues to practice. He really cares about the animals, and their owners. He provides so much background/educational info that I never leave his office wondering what is wrong with my pet. He does not request unnecessary lab work and procedures, but is prudent in managing costs. I really appreciate that. I think Portola Plaza Veterinary Hospital is the BEST!!!

Dr. Rodriguez is a fabulous veterinarian. I have been using him for close to 20 years, and 5 dogs. He has made accurate diagnoses with various ailments and performed excellent surgeries to correct joint issues in the legs of my King Charles Cavalier. He has a gentle, cordial, and caring demeanor, and takes his time with his patients. One of the things I'm very impressed with is that he will call you personally to follow up on issues and the care of your pet.

My dog has gone to this vet ever since we got him six years ago. Dr. Rodgriguez and his staff have been great. My dog has had a couple of emergencies through the past few years and he always gets through it and heals up nicely after a visit from the vet. The place is really small inside, but it's a close local place. The staff here are very nice and helpful. My dog may not love it here, but my family and I love this vet. They keep our doggie healthy and happy.

I came in her last minute right when they opened this morning because my veterinarian I usually go to wasn't there today and wow could I have not been happier that my old dogs doctor wasn't there because this place was like a fresh of breath air, ( I am terrible with names and I was still half asleep when she told me but I think her name was Danielle) im so sorry if that's wrong but the lady helping us out was so nice and personable that I will tell all my friends of this great place and great people and the doctor was very knowledgable and wasn't all about the money he was there to help animals and help us out!

I definitely will be coming back here from now on. My dog had completely broke her back nail deeply and they quickly with no wait took her back right away so she wasn't in anymore pain and gave her a calm shot and fixed her right back up! Thank you guys so much!

I can't say that I have been to many other Vets in my area to compare but I can say that Dr. Rodriguez and staff do a really good job and I believe they provide a very good service. Dr. Rodriguez is a very reasonable doctor and he will give you excellent advice and the proper service that you need. I know he runs an honest business because I came in several times with my 20+ year old cat and he talked me down from doing tests and spending excess money.

He is honest and I trust him with my dog as well. One other reviewer mentioned that they felt overcharged and I can understand that. The only criticism that I could possible say about Portola Plaza Vet Hospital is that they don't present you with office visit/procedure costs which can easily result in being surprised of the cost at the end. So my advice to anyone coming here - be sure to ask about the cost of everything before it happens. If you feel that its too much and have the luxury of shopping around than go for it. Beyond that, I highly recommend Portola Plaza Veterinary Hospital
