Services
Recognizing a need for professional avian and exotic animal care, Dr. Mimi Shepherd started For Pet's Sake in 1987 as a house-call service. From day one, she saw only avian and exotic animals. In 1990, Dr. Shepherd opened the doors to the avian and exotic animal hospital; which has seen a variety of domestic animals and wildlife come thru the door, including a mountain lion, fox, peacock, and raccoons.
Our doctors work exclusively with exotic animals, and are members of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, American Veterinary Medical Association, and Georgia Veterinary Medical Association. Owner, earned a BS in Biology from Georgia Southern University in 1994.
Our appointment book is computerized which allows us to efficiently make appointments for you and your pet. Our receptionists and team will attempt to accommodate all requests to the best of our ability. If you feel you have an emergency with your pet, please call us immediately so that a staff member can advise you on your particular emergency.
Most veterinary students have the option of receiving clinical training in private practice (called an "externship") as part of the clinical year of training. We have been fortunate enough to host several veterinary student externs over the years. Students will be featured on our website throughout the year as they rotate through our practice.

My rat Remy got the best care, I was really worried that there was nothing that could be done for him and I'd have to put him to sleep. I was able to get him to surgery the same day I got him checked out, and he's doing so much better! Love the staff I met there, super friendly and understanding.

Our beloved leopard gecko wasn't feeling to well and our normal vet doesn't work with exotics so I called For Pet's Sake without knowing anything about them. From the first phone call everyone at the practice has been wonderful. They treated me and my animal with respect and care and made sure to help me along the way to get the little guy back to 100%.

From teaching me without making me feel dumb to follow up calls, this practice is exceptional. I wish I could take my cats and dog here! Thank you so much for taking care of Dip. He's doing so well now! For anyone with an exotic animal this is THE go to place for the best care in Atlanta.

I scheduled an appointment with Dr Hill because FPS could see my cockatiel with an eye infection sooner (by 1 day) than my normal avian vet. Neither time when I spoke with them for scheduling the appointment or when I called informing them that I was running 10 min late before my scheduled time was I informed of the very strict 10 min late policy.

I arrived 12 minutes late and was told I had to reschedule or do a drop off. There was no flexibility or understanding. I'm very disappointed and frustrated by this experience, especially since I had driven from Smyrna to make it to this location. I will continue to stick to my regular vet and no longer consider this vet.

I took my 4-year-old bunny to this vet for a second opinion and advisement on next steps, as I had some serious health concerns with her that ultimately ended up needing surgical removal. This was my very first visit with this facility. Dr. Kelsey Paras was the veterinarian I worked with. Her and the rest staff were VERY well-educated and helpful in explaining what was going on and alternative options for treatment.

They were very easy to work with. Though this was my first encounter with this office n I ended up going through with the surgery with them. It was a risky procedure, but everything has ended up well so far and my bunny is healing up nicely! The staff were fantastic with answering questions, following up, and advising me of treatments moving forward.

They have truly been wonderful to work with during this major event. To have a major operation done with a vet you are not familiar with is a huge undertaking, but I truly felt that this facility was the best option for care and treatment and I still feel this way. We will definitely be back! And once again, from the bottom of my (and my bunny's) heart, thank you to the FPS staff for everything.

Best people ever! Very considerate for you and your pet's well-being to the best they can. They have no idea how much I appreciate their kindness. As a fellow person who works in animal hospital field, I am forever in your debt. Since the pandemic hit, the vet hospitals all over USA has been overwhelmed, overworked and not appreciated for their sacrifice. I will always have an open mind and understanding for every decision you make for me and my pets, because I know your heart is for our pets. Thank you for your service.

I want to give a shout out to the staff at For Pet's Sake and especially Debbie. Whenever we've taken our guinea pigs in, they have shown a genuine concern for them and even fought to keep one of them alive. Debbie has been a great help to us and, like the rest of the staff, she truly cares for the animals she sees every day. If anyone wants to know where to take their exotic animals for care, I will definitely send them to For Pet's Sake. Thanks to all of you who have cared for our pets through the years!

Looks a lot better than the oitdated google maps photo. The inside looks even better and they made sure I understood what was happening with my bearded dragon. They also made sure all my questions were answered and that nothing was wrong with my beardie.

We got to meet Dr. Hutcheson for first time today. I was so blessed to have met him today. He blessed me today with his service. I have been bringing CoCo to this vet since 2020. Everyone who works at the vet is friendly. Dr. Burchfield saved Coco life and I am forever thankful! Coco visited the vet today to get her stitches removed from her neck. Dr. Hutcheson was very knowledgeable and patient with Coco. I love For Pet's Sake!

We had such a positive experience with Dr. Hill. She took care of our 28yo Cockatoo Coco. Dr. Hill was very patient and explained everything in detail. Dr. Hill is now our official vet for Coco!

This was my first visit to For Pet's Sake, and I am blown away by the care the staff showed to my leopard gecko, Ravioli. When I called to make the appointment, the staff was incredibly responsive and helpful with my questions as this was my first time there. When we arrived, we were quickly brought back to the exam room and the vet tech as well as Dr. Hung were incredibly caring when handling and examining my Ravioli.

They listened to all my concerns, gave me lots of information and made sure to go the extra mile to make sure my pet was well taken care of. Ravioli had pieces of stuck shed in his eye, which was causing him a lot of discomfort. Dr. Hung did an amazing job of getting it out carefully, checking for any additional damage to the eye, and flushing it out thoroughly but gently.

It was so apparent to me during the appointment that she was incredibly knowledgeable about leopard geckos, which is a huge relief for a pet parent as we only want the best for our little exotics! I knew immediately we were in good hands and I could 100% trust her. I am SO pleased with the care, I cannot say it enough. Amazing place.

Unfortunately, when I brought my Guinea pig here we discovered she had some medical issues we couldn't resolve and we had to let her go. It was very hard for my family. The staff here was very supportive, kind and reassuring. They took great care of our baby. I'm very grateful we found them.

My bearded dragon has an eye infection, I took him here to get checked out. They claimed it was an eye cap that got lodged and sent me on my way with a medication that did not help at all. I also stated multiple times I wanted him checked for a parasite and I had concerns about his stool, they didn't check and he still has the infection and it got worse after the visit.

The overall visit was over $170 to wait for two hours and have them check him for a few minutes. When I asked to be checked again or prescribed something else they wanted to charge me an extra $170. Which is absurd. I asked if there was at least a discount because they didn't find the issue the first time and was refused. I told them I didn't want to have to take him back and forth an hours drive and spend that much to have the issue get worse and the woman on the phone said it could probably take up to ten visits to figure out the problem and that bearded dragons were expensive.

I know they're expensive but doing your job right is a different story, no one has 1700$ to throw to people who aren't even helping. Very disappointed by this place. Will not be coming back.

This was my pet rabbit first vet visit I was nervous since I wouldn't be able to walk in but the staff was really nice. Their new place looks great, the doctor was really nice and communicated well with me. I recommend this place for rabbit owners.

We have been coming to this practice for decades. We've always had lots of animals, especially birds. The staff here are always courteous and professional. Vet was so great about calling with daily updates and info, they don't act rushed and answered all questions. The vets are amazing, and have such compassion for humans and animals alike. We have had 2 unexpected terrible animal losses recently.

They were incredibly comforting, cared enough to even send condolence cards and a beautiful plant to us. And Dr Burchfield, Stacy, Debbie, Katie, y'all rock. thank you for all you do.

OMG this place is a slaughter house! I have read an personally experienced there abuse and torture. They tricked me into services that are gruesome and grotesque. Was told by a real vet that they use all my pet needed was some pills to help her acid so she would eat more. Apparently one of they're animals needed organs and was dying. So they offered me free services and gave me a sob story to coherence my wife into criminal torture and abuse for our families pets organs all under the guise your pet didn't and isn't going to make it all that my pet was in for was a yearly exam.

I have two parrots that both got sick at the beginning of covid and both were handled very professionally. My amazon was really sick with an ecoli infection and would have died if they did not force feed/medicated him. He stayed a week and is happy as ever now. He's only 40 for I'm hoping for 40 more especially with such an amazing vet. Recently my birds got into a fight and the little one had a wound that wouldn't let her walk.

They took care of my craziness appropriately and she is using her foot now! I can't thank this hospital enough since I am one of those crazy bird people. I am so thankful!

Our parrot was brought in for an injury on his foot. Without discussion, they placed a collar on his head, wrapped both feet, Sedated him, observed him for an hour, then left him unsupervised. The vet wrote an email to notify us of the sedation and collar. An hour later, he was dead. only after the fact did we even discover the email. We were assured the parrot was better off being supervised in their office than coming home with us. That was a tragic mistake.

I am very impressed with this vet. I was traveling home for the holidays with my bunny Hazel. About a week after settling in, One morning I noticed she would not eat her breakfast which was NOT NORMAL. I called other vets which could not fit me in but referred For Pet's Sake, luckily they could fit us in that day about an hour later. This was my first time dealing with GI Stasis but they put my mind at ease. Hazel stayed overnight, they called me to update me on her status and again the next day. Thankfully she made a great recovery overnight so I took her home the next evening. I honestly like this vet better than mine at home! I can just tell that they care about her well-being as much as I do.

These employees are absolutely amazing. They are taking care of lizards I saved from petco right now trying to treat parasites and I could not have more trust in them. They absolutely love the two babies and even though i can't be with them or go in there I know they are being careful and gentle and making sure they stay warm and fed. Please take your exotics here even if it's a drive because trust me you couldn't find anyone better. I live 30 minutes from them and From now on I will always be taking every one of my lizards to them.

I brought my bunny in with a puffy chest and lumps on her body. I asked them specifically to screen for Cancer. They said it was just fat. She died a couple months later of Cancer which they never admitted until AFTER she died. Maybe they don't have the tools to test for Cancer? Then they should have referred me elsewhere. I wish I had known, then maybe I could have fought the Cancer.

I would have done absolutely anything to save her! Or I could have at least spent more quality time with her in those last few months, had I known she was so sick, instead of just "fat"?!

Highly recommend this vet if you've got an exotic. I'm only in the area temporarily but needed my hamster seen pretty quickly. I called and was able to get an appointment for him the following day. The techs and receptionists were all so friendly and seemed genuinely to care about my ham, and the vet herself appeared very knowledgable and explained things very clearly and concisely (over the phone while I waited in the parking lot, thanks COVID!) and did not push any unnecessary tests or expenses.

They even took COVID precautions very seriously, coming out to my car to grab him, and bringing him back out as well. The kicker was when they called me a week later to follow up and see how my hamster was doing, which they did not have to do! I really appreciate the care they provided us. 5/5 recommend!

I drove 30 minutes from my home to come here because my regular vet was out of town and I don't regret bringing my rabbit here. The people here genuinely care about the well-being of animals. My rabbit came in drooling and with stinky breath and in less than an hour, they were able to identify the problem and treat it. I had gotten there about 15 minutes earlier and they were able to look at her before the actual time of the appointment. It's been less than 7 hours since they treated her and her breath already stopped smelling bad, she is on her way to recovery.

They charged about $200 for everything and I was honestly expecting them to charge me maybe $600 so this was a huge relief! I really recommend this place and I will definitely be coming again!

This is suppose to be an exotic vet. I took my healthy guinea pig there to get neutered. When they gave him back to me he developed infection on both testicles. I took him back and he stayed there over the weekend. Then they called me to say he was ready to come home. They gave him back to me in GI status and dying. Tried to make themselves look good by putting fresh veggies in his box.

He had lots of yellow around his mouth because he was dying, he died that night which I had to pay another vet over $50 just to take his body because it was late. Vet called me from Pet's Sake and gave me an apology after I had complained but i don't feel he was sincere especially saying He said he would give me refund on the neuter but never happened.

He also paid adoption fee to replace my baby through an awesome guinea pig rescue but had to give the aggressive one back to the rescue. If you have an exotic pet I really recommend going to a vet that cares and keeps their word. I know I will never see the refund. Don't think they really cared.

Finding or pets sake has been a blessing for me and my senior guinea pig, Nugget. I moved from New York and only wish that I found their clinic upon first arrival to Atlanta! After having many medical complications due to the neglect under a different vets care in midtown both with surgery and boarding, the team at for pets sake was able to help diagnose and treat all of Nugget's issues quickly and with the least stress and medication possible. Nugget is my baby and the staff and doctors at For Pets Sake genuinely care for animals and have the highest level of expertise when it comes to exotics. Nugget recently had a surgery with Dr. Burchfield, the vet we've seen most often, which was so smooth and Nugget was his normal squeaky self within 4 days of the surgery!

Such a drastic difference than his recovery from his first surgery at the first vet which took almost 3 weeks to fully recover. He's even more active than prior to surgery which was unbelievable! Nugget has has also been seen for appointments by the owner, Dr. Hutchinson, and Dr. Paras who have provided the same excellent level of care as Dr. Burchfield.

The staff at the front desk, Debbie and Katie have always been welcoming, compassionate, knowledgeable and organized to make every visit seamless from start to finish. The facility is clean, comfortable, and stress free with lots of goods for purchase for last minute needs. The entire team truly makes you and your pet feel like family which is the most important thing to me. I cannot thank them enough for being an integral part of bringing Nugget back to health and extending his time with me for more squeaks, cuddles, and kale!

My bunny was suffering from GI Stasis and these people were absolutely amazing. I had a terrible experience at an animal hospital that knew little about exotics and gave Annabelle only a less than half chance of survival. I got here and the Doctors were very knowledgeable and put me at ease. They kept her overnight and the next day she had made such improvements that she was able to come home.

They also followed up the next day with a phone call. Annabelle is back to her normal self and that wouldn't have been possible without the awesome team here! I know exactly where to go if she has any issues in the future.

I love this Vet! He knows his exotic animals from turtles to parrots. He takes care of my Cockatoo, Clara. My 12 year old son loves to go with me because we love to see what other animals are rolling in. One time a young lady opened her carrier and a sweet rat peeked it's little nose out. It was like Ron and his pet Scabber's from Harry Potter.

Another time we saw an owl that had broken his wing (omg is this Harry's Hedwig?!). For Pets Sake does NOT take cats or dogs. They are on time and professional. The Vet is very handsome and down to earth. He is a little scared of male cockatoos because one tried to gouge his eye out in the past. The Vet also makes these very nice soy wax candles for only $5.

I had to use the clinic urgently when my bird cracked his beak and the other vet was also excellent. The bill to get my cockatoos foot examined (she was limping) and get her yearly visit done with wings clipped was only $80 I am heading over today to get my Clara some healthy pellets at a better price and selection than petco or pet supermarket.

Dr. Holly Burchfield is a delightful Veterinarian that handled my 23-year-old grumpy (at times) Macaw with tender care. She is very knowledgeable, kind and was able to answer all my questions. If you love your exotic pets as much as I do. For Pet's Sake they need to come here! ()

This place is absolutely amazing! When I couldn't find anyone else to help a poor injured wild bird, they were there to help! I am so happy to have discovered this place, I have 2 birds at home and I will definitely be back to check out the special bird foods and toys they had available. Now I know where to go!
