Family Pet - Carrie Schneider The Family Pet is a full-service Seattle veterinary practice based in Ballard with over 70 years of experience, offering modern medicine with traditional values. Being a family owned business, pets aren't treated according to a corporate template or prescribed treatment that your pet may not need. We furnish individualized treatment for each patient at a level you select.

Doctors Carrie Schneider and Haley O'Connell, and our highly qualified support staff are experienced in complicated cases and geriatric medicine.
Services
The Family Pet would like to welcome you, your family, and your special family member(s). As you explore our website, it is our hope that you will learn more about our dedication to your family and the quality veterinary medicine and service we provide. Our goal is to maintain a veterinary health care team committed to providing exceptional client service and veterinary health care.
The Family Pet recommend that dogs and cats be given a complete annual physical exam and, if appropriate, blood, urine and/or fecal tests, even when there's not a problem. Changes occur from year to year, especially as your pet ages. A comprehensive exam not only allows evaluating your pet for current problems, but also enables us to better understand your pet's specific health needs and develop an individualized preventative health-care program, vaccination protocols, nutrition programs, supplements, parasite control, training, dental care, and breed related disease risk factors are discussed.
Too often, people think that declawing is a simple surgery to remove a cat's nails-the equivalent of having your fingernails trimmed. This is far from the truth. Declawing is not like a manicure. It is serious surgery. The Family Pet will declaw only if there is a legitimate medical reason on the part of the owner or pet such as an immunocompromised owner.
The Family Pet recommends the Soft Paws brand which are lightweight vinyl nail shields that are safe, painless, non-toxic caps adhered to your cat's natural nails. The majority of cats need sedation for the application, however once applied, they tolerate Soft Paws extremely well and don't even realize they are wearing them.

They're okay when you can actually see them but they more often than not are booked out for weeks and just tell you to go to an urgent care or walk in clinic. It defeats the purpose of having a vet. They also do not answer the phone often or return voicemails, which is frustrating. Going to take my business elsewhere as it isn't logical to constantly have to go to a different clinic.

Spay for our female dog went well except that we postponed it to avoid her being in heat for the spay. They still charged us a canine in heat fee even though it had been almost 2 months since she stopped bleeding. Everything I have read says a dog will be in heat for up to 21 days. I find it unlikely she would still be in heat 2 months later.

Very communicative. They matched my energy and gave all information based on what I can give them. Helped us walk through our cat's problems and future steps with no complaints.

This used to be our "go to" vet for our dogs and cat. Unfortunately, their quality of service on the administrative side has dropped off dramatically. Nobody answers the phone or responds to voicemail messages when trying to schedule appointments.

Worst. Care. Ever. Maybe the worst interpersonal experience as well. Went in for full exam for our older pet. Thought the exam went OK but realized after they took him back for his shots the Vet had not examined our dog's teeth. Pointed this out to the tech and she said the vet would look at them. We were told the time for our visit was up. I insisted his teeth be examined.

The vet did not come out and look at his teeth with us, instead looked at them in the back while he got his shots. Then another tech came out with a scribbled note that 4 of his teeth were bad and need to be extracted. I asked to talk to the vet for explanation and was again told our time was up. Very upsetting news. Period. When I objected and insisted the vet explain this to us, the vet tech got mad and said I was out of line.

I was asking for what I paid for, $225 for a full exam. I said how important our dog is to us, all I had asked for was a full exam and started to cry. Then she laughed at us. My husband said she was out of line for laughing. Really should have caught this exchange on tape, me crying because she just gave me a note saying our dog needs to have 4 teeth pulled and her laughing at me.

We waited 30 minutes and the vet never came to talk to us. She was hiding in the back. We left never to return. Sad as I have used this vet for our pets ever since I was 5 years old. Over 60 years. Never ever ever go here.

Most unethical vet I'ver ever encountered. The list of complaints is too long and upsetting to detail. The best summary is that critical test results were withheld from me. One of my dogs was prescribed a medication that the lab stated on the results page would be dangerous to the welfare of the pet. This nearly cost me my dog. There were other serious issues and my other dog was left projectile vomiting post a simple vaccine. One of the greatest regrets of my life was bringing my dogs here.

Yikes! Not a good experience. I feel they care more about proving and being right than learning and being curious. Not even sure where to begin. If you care about your pet, maybe skip this place. Brought my dog in for an ear infection late Friday. Was told the ear looks inflamed but that she is fine. Sunday morning puss and tears started coming from my dog's eye on the same side of the bad ear. Monday morning I called and emailed the Family Pet and asked if they could get me in free of charge as I had just paid $200 and I felt the vet may have dropped the ball here.

My pet was in a lot of distress even though we had just been at the vet and were told that she's fine. They made no effort or allowance to get me in. Received an email saying: much could happen from Friday to Monday, could my pet have hit her eye on something?, they could definitely not see my pet free of charge for a "new issue", the ear and eye are not connected (huh?), and that in the photo my pet's eye looks fine. the email kept reiterating that this is a "new issue", which felt passive aggressive to me. Seems like they don't care about retaining clients- the lack of vets paired with the abundance of pets in the area allow for unacceptable "care". There may be a reason 7 out of the 10 most recent reviews are one star. Not the place for my pet.

Do not utilize this vet. The veterinarian's do not communicate well with the animal owners and treatment is wrought with miscommunications. Some of the staff are friendly, but others do not communicate clearly either which compounds the problem. Also, the vet took 1.5 hours to talk to me and nothing was done yet, so I left. I ended up missing another personal appointment that day.

All the staff seem to be good with animals and treated my dog with care, but unfortunately their office administration is incompetent, and all the services are more expensive than any other vet I've been to. We tried scheduling appointments multiple times, but they don't call back. At our latest appointment, they informed us they lost all the records for my dog, so they don't know what he needs or doesn't need. I truly did appreciate the way they treated my dog, but I can't tolerate the lack of organization. I know I can get better service elsewhere.

$175 for a simple health certificate? This is over twice what I've played elsewhere. If you have to come here, be certain to get prices up front.

We love them. I've been taking my dogs there since 2005, and we still make the drive to Ballard even though we're in West Seattle. They are excellent, and I cannot recommend them enough. Shout out especially to Dr. Krzmarzick and Erica, for always being willing to schedule things and answer questions exclusively via email.

I've taken my two cats here before and was happy with the service. I had horrible service from Jet City Veterinarian before when my 17 yo cat had diabetes. What I like is that there is dental care with no anesthesia. It's quite a bit cheaper and safer. This was in 2018. Now I am considering taking my two new cats (After my 2 17 yo's passed).

The one thing that I am concerned about is reading the new reviews that make me a bit nervous because it doesn't sound like service is the same there now that the previous owner or associate left. It is the utmost important to be listened to and treated with respect. especially if you're paying high prices comparatively and that people are dealing with covid and tough times.

My black cat Sparticus is on the from page above when I typed in The Family Pet on Yelp. He's the black cat with the big head and copper eyes, and is labeled Black Cat's Matter Too!. He and my other girl KleaKatrabella are very special to me and when I go to any vet, if I'm not being heard, or I'm being condescended, I will take my babies elsewhere. Just say'n! Don't change what works!

I have been with The Family Pet for a few years now and I wish I had written this review sooner! I have taken my boys to a previous vet and had just the worst experience with them. I won't go into details because this review is about The Family Pet and not them. =) I don't have a specific vet my boys have seen as they usually see who is available.

But no matter who they see, they are always given the best care. Prior to COVID, I would be in the room with them and would see first-hand just how caring the vets and techs were. When COVID hit and they didn't allow owners into the facility, I was not worried one bit about the level of care my boys would receive. Why the 5 stars? I have two stories to share: First is my black and tan mini Doxie, Guinness.

My boy came in for a regular check up and during this check up, one of the vets rightly diagnosed a heart murmur. It was the FAINTEST heart murmur, but she caught it. We took him to the cardiologist upon her recommend and even that doctor was surprised she was able to hear it because it was so faint. But because we caught it super early, we are able to monitor and track its progression and manage it so he will have a long, happy, life.

Second is my longhaired mini doxie, Whisky (yes, there's a name trend). I had brought him into the vet because he wasn't eating and he was having accidents in the house (something he does not do). They rightly caught that he needed emergency vet services and advised me to take him to the emergency vet right away. On my 15 min drive there, they already had made the call to the ER to give them the full run down of what they detected as well as what history they had available on him.

I was able to hand him off and that night the ER told me just how close we were to losing him. They kept him for 5 nights to get him back to a stable place. Those are two horrific stories that ended happy because of how sharp and quick the vets are at this place. I would've easily lost both my boys (and painfully for them) if it wasn't for The Family Pet.

The front desk is always nice and considerate and are quick to relay questions I have to the vet and get me answers quickly. They always work to problem solve with me if I need help with something. I seriously would not trust my boys with any other vet and I will continue to refer others to them until I'm blue in the face. Thank you, Family Pet!

Lack of transparency, poor scheduling, under-trained tech staff, horrible business hours, and heavy handed sales tactics are alive and well at The Family Pet. My dog received adequate care and check ups, but it was done in the least ethical and caring way possible.

Dr. Kzmaric is amazing. She was so good with me and my family when we had to say goodbye to our pup. She did everything she could and made sure to always give us all our options. We are so thankful for her and the family pet team.

The Family Pet helped me through a difficult months long process to euthanize my beloved cat. For someone like me who is very very very attached to their cat, both Dr. Schneider and Dr. Love and every staff member I dealt with was a Godsend during a really hard time. I Family Pet.

Great clinic! They have been awesome taking care of my senior dog, and are really good about being able to get him in for appointments quickly. The vets and technicians always explain everything and take the time to talk through whatever is going on with him so we can make the best decisions about his care. He is also dog reactive and they make sure to be aware of that while he is at the clinic and ensure a stress free experience. Highly recommend.

I had a wonderful first visit for my new dog. The techs and veterinarian were all so kind and helpful. They explained everything and gave great recommendations. The front desk staff was great as well, and checked me in right away and got our appointment started. Both my dog and I felt as ease, and I'm looking forward to working with them to keep my pup healthy and happy.

Very happy coming here for a wide range of issues! I've worked with 3 of the vets and they're very thorough with explaining the situation (both knowns and unknowns). Very patient with my many questions and discussing trade offs of treatments/tests (treatments have been successful). While my pup dreads the vet, I can tell that she's not afraid of the people working there, just of the situation.

Not cheap, but I've also found the pricing to be upfront in their quotes and I haven't had issues with my pet insurance accepting the invoices. Also pretty impressed with the scheduling. I hear a lot of vets are backed up these days from burnout and an influx of pets.

This is a good vet, but make sure you ask for a quote beforehand - even for something small. I was shocked with the amount I was charged for a travel health certificate. I could have spent less buying an extra plane ticket. It would have been nice to be informed of the cost beforehand.

The family pet is great! My dog mouse is a rescue and we're coming up on his 1 year gotcha date and I've had one other vet clinic experience with mouse but the family pet has always been so much more help and that is the reason why we keep coming back. Dr Krzmarzick is Mouse's regular vet and she is so sweet and always checks in on mouse a couple days after our appointment to make sure he's doing ok.

Their advice is always backed up by reason and what they think will be best for mouse. He's finally come out of his shell and everyone at the family pet is always patient with him. Their safety protocols are excellent as well. You just pull up into a parking spot and call the front desk and they send someone to meet you at your car and grab your pet from you and drop offs are the same way. "Curbside" pickup for your pet!

The staff was very helpful and friendly from our first contact via phone, through our pup being treated, and the follow-up with us a few days later to make sure all was well. The COVID protocols were simple and clearly explained in advance. Overall, it was as pleasant and easy an experience as one could ask for.

After moving to the Seattle area earlier this year, I was looking for a good vet for my cats. I landed on The Family Pet, and I am so glad I did! I recently made an appointment for one of my cats, and everyone I interacted with was friendly, responsive, and professional. Erica at reception was incredibly helpful both with scheduling my appointment and with follow up questions I had after my appointment. Dr.

Love was very helpful, fully explaining the next steps needed for my cat's ongoing care, and answering my many questions. I felt very confident in her recommendations, and she clearly explained everything to me. I definitely feel at-ease knowing my pets are in such great hands!

We brought our dog Adobe in because she quit eating, and after a week we thought she was done-for. The Family Pet literally saved her life. Adobe is an extremely anxious dog but that was no problem for them, as she was there 2 full days on IV. We can say our dog is only alive today because of these professionals.

We have a 15 year old Dachshund mix and he has had a few cysts and some back problems along the way in his lifetime, and every time that he goes to the family pet we feel safe and secure that they will do the very best to take care of our boy! Just like they would if he was their own! I recommend The Family Pet to anybody that ever needs a vet in the Seattle area. 3 of my friends transferred to the family pet because of us and how much we sing their praises! They are by far the best vet! The staff is caring and helpful and we just love them!

We have been taking our sweet girl here since day 1 & have always received outstanding service & support from the vets, vet techs, & staff. In her first year, our clumsy pup has had enough injuries & weird health things to last her a lifetime, so we have been frequent patients--we would never go anywhere else. Thank you Family Pet!

Since bringing our new puppy home we have been to the Family Pet several times, and have always been impressed by their services. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and Dr. Nevins has been very helpful answering all of our questions about our new puppy. They are very transparent about prices and not pushy about any services. We were worried our puppy would not like the vet, and she actually never wants to leave!

Pros: the vet is nice and seems to really love animals. Cons: I feel they try to upsell me with extras and everything is crazy expensive. In the past they wanted over $800 to spay my 8 lb dog (it was ~$120 at the spay and neuter clinic and they did a great job) and had quoted me over $2k for a teeth cleaning for my older dog. The vet missed a giant lump growing on my dog's side during his exam, so when she called to discuss I asked her to look into it but she never looped back with me.

I asked the tech about it when I picked up my dogs (I stayed in the car per covid guidelines so didn't get to talk to the vet in person) and the tech just said if the vet was concerned she would have said something. I really wanted to know what's happening to him :( Kind of feel like I wasted my money and will need to take him elsewhere to get a thorough exam.

We first tried the Family Pet for our two bunnies because our normal vet did not have that expertise. We had such a positive experience that we switched our dog's care to them, too. I'm also impressed by how conscientious they are of safety during COVID. It's another reminder that they are a thoughtful practice.

Everyone was really nice and my cat didn't seem too upset from the exam and vaccines. I appreciated that the visit notes let me know the ways in which she might seem off after all the vaccines. She was really tired last night but I didn't worry because I knew to expect that. I also appreciated the measures taken to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Beyond upset at The Family Pet right now! We made reservations and confirmed. The person told us the office would be closed and knock on door for drop off. The office followed safe and prudent procedures for COVID-19. They had me call from my car when I arrived. They brought my pet inside and back to me. Dr. Krzmarzick is fantastic and provided detailed medical results to me. Then she provided personal, caring, follow-up. She listened to my concerns and we agreed on the best treatment plan for my cat.

You cannot find a better vet clinic. They have treated 3 of our dogs with kindness, integrity, and real skill. Your pet's best interest is their main concern, not their bottom line. They treat pet owners like adults. They do a fantastic job communicating all the treatment and care options available. We will keep going.

The Family Pet has been taking fantastic care of our pets for over 15 years. The staff is friendly and always more than helpful in every way. Appointment as long which allows time for thorough examinations and discussions with the doctor. They are the BEST!!
