The doctors and staff at Union Veterinary Clinic understand that your pet is a member of your family. We know that quality veterinary care is essential to keeping your pet healthy and happy throughout their life. That's why we are committed to providing the best medicine and customer service. We provide state-of-the-art, cutting edge medicine, but are small enough to provide the individual care, attention, and consistency you and your pet deserve.
Dr. Gross grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. After graduating from Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she moved to Washington DC. She completed an internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals. After completing the internship she stayed on as a staff veterinarian there. She worked as a relief veterinarian throughout the DC area after leaving FHA, but has been established as a full time veterinarian here since 2007. She is our Medical Director at UVC. She lives with her husband Ry, daughter Matilda, son Leo, dog Rooney and cat Sparkles.
We are extremely proud to introduce our new clinic manager, Amy McClosky! Amy has been with Union Veterinary Clinic for the better part of a decade as one of our most skilled Veterinary Technicians. She has transitioned into a leadership role as Ry has taken on broader responsibilities. We will have more about Amy and her past experience posted here in the coming weeks.
Union Veterinary Clinic asks that you call ahead to schedule an appointment with a doctor. The doctor will make every attempt to see scheduled appointments on time; however, emergencies may occur causing us to run behind schedule. Emergency cases will always receive top priority, followed by patients with previously scheduled appointments.

This is my sweetheart Nilla. I'm 59 years old and and she's the first dog I've had in over 50 years! And yes there have been a lot of great cats before Nilla came, but being with Nilla these last 6 months or so has been one of the best experiences in my life. She's just amazing!

Union Vet has always shown great care and consideration to me and my dogs. The vets have all worked with me to find the best solutions for care of my dogs, with flexibility and options on procedures, and thorough attention to detail. I highly recommend Union Vet. I believe they have the best interest at heart for my pet's health.

Every time I take my dog to this vet clinic it's a great experience. I had a scare last year where he had to undergo numerous tests and the vet called me regularly to update me on what was going on. I highly recommend this clinic. Much better than other clinics I have used in the past. And I never wait to be seen.

This is the most expensive veterinarian clinic I've ever been to in my entire life, so prepare for good gouging. If there is an opportunity to charge you or up charge you, they will guaranteed. I've been here two or three times and always felt the staff had a bit of an edge to them. However, today was my last visit to this Clinic as the staff was beyond rude to the point where other customers outside shook their head and vocalized their amazement. i attempted to ask a staff member how much longer because I was told 25 minutes and was sitting outside in my car for an hour and 45 minutes.

He ignored me totally. After calling a couple of times he came out dropped my dog's leash and medication on the ground and walked inside telling me off as he walked away. If that all was not enough, last thing I will say is I have yet to see a single dog walk out of that clinic that did not look like it was having a panic attack which makes me wonder how well the staff is treating the animals.

I have been taking my dog to Union Vet for about 5 years. We have loved our experience. The team at Union Vet is super friendly, informative and helpful. Their exams are thorough and they take the time to answer any question I have. My dog is often very nervous and skittish at the vet but the team does a great job remaining patient and doing everything they can to make him feel safe. I highly recommend Union Vet!

They are very nice especially the doctors, they are very thorough and examining the pets and they take their time explaining the medical condition, options of treatment, and the cost of the treatment upfront so what I tell you is how much it's going to cost No hidden fees or surprises.

Services are fine, no better or worse than most other clinics I've used with different pets over the years. Unfortunately, it's been unreliable with last minute cancellations at bad times leaving customers to scramble and find alternatives.

The staff at Union Veterinary is knowledgeable and friendly. I just moved to DC and am very happy I selected them as the vet for my new cat! Overall very positive experience for me and my pet.

Wonderful staff! Dr. Applebee was very thorough and kind during my kitten's check up. He even told me his availability for the rest of the week just in case my kitten has any reactions to the vaccines. The vaccine prices are pretty high but that's DC for you.

TL;DR Don't come here if you value convenience or customer service. We loved going to Union, but will be seeking a new vet after their recent policy changes around medications. Our dog is on a daily medication regimen for thyroid issues and until recently we had no trouble doing auto-ship through Chewy.com every 6 months for both her thyroid meds and her flea/tick/heartworm meds.

It was simple, easy, and affordable, and it helped us stick to the regimen. With their new medication policy they will no longer approve the thyroid medication auto-ship through Chewy - they will ONLY approve the "preventative" and require us to come into the office to pick up a paper prescription to fax to Chewy. Paper and fax.? What is this, 1996?

When asked why they could not continue approving both at the same time (the buttons on the Chewy request are LITERALLY next to each other) their response was "well, this is just easier for the doctors and it's what the owners want to do". Reading between the lines what they're really saying is "we want to make this a hassle for you to do through Chewy so that you cave in and pay 20x the price to buy the same medication through us for convenience instead" (seriously, it's that much more expensive through them for the same meds). Terrible customer service mindset there, and it's just cost them a repeat customer and vocal referral source.

I have been taking my dogs to Union Vet since I moved to Capitol Hill 20 years ago. They do a great job. My most recent experience was having my Welsh terrier Lily's teeth cleaned yesterday. I was very happy with every aspect of the care. In particular, I appreciated that Dr. Applebee updated me with 2 phone calls during the day that Lily was at the clinic, which included her having anesthesia. Lily is a very important part of our lives, & Dr. Applebee understands & respects that fact.

I moved from overseas and my dog had not been able to necessarily have the same level of care where I was posted. The team was very understanding, talked me through different tests vs. vaccinations in addition to types of illnesses to watch out for in the DC area and helped answer all of my questions. Can't say much on costs as I'm coming from a place where I had house visits for less than $50. :

I just can't recommend this vet. We brought two cats here and they were siblings. Four years ago, due to liver failure, we put her brother to sleep and they botched it - he was facing away from us and as soon they sedated him, his heart stopped. And we didn't have a chance to say good bye. This time, her sister was 19 years old and in rapid declining health.

She absolutely hated vets so we didn't bring her in. Would not take pills or even mixed in food. She wasn't stupid. And because it was some time since we last brought her in, they said they had to do quality of life exam and kept asking me - rudely and coldly - implying we could have done this or that. I was floored. We struggled with the decision but we knew it was time.

And the vet made me feel horrible and she did nothing to assure me. Very judgmental. She reluctantly admitted there was a lot of issues with her at end. They went ahead and put her to sleep. To add insult to the injury, I was told it would be $170 on phone. No. The final bill was $420. Just be warned. And I honestly do not know why I returned to this vet again. I will not again.

After years of supporting this office, I am sad to say that I would no longer recommend. While the support staff at Union are great, it has been a night and day experience working with a vet at another location. Empathy, patience, conversations, and authentic care are things I did not realize were missing until I switched. And cheaper!

I've been going to Union Vet for 13 years and I've always liked the veterinarians, but the reception staff is a mess. More than once they have made mistakes with appointment scheduling, and they argue with me about it and tell me that I said things in previous calls that I never said. It's frustrating because I do like the care that the doctors provide, but I may have to switch to Atlas because dealing with the staff at Union is too stressful.

The staff is so kind to my Maizy - always patient and gentle with her. Dr. Appleby is great! He was thorough, never made me feel rushed, explained options and costs for my dog's treatment and generally has a stellar bedside manner for animals and their humans. He is also very knowledgeable about Rx and specific conditions in my breed of dog. I recommended him to my friends seeking a vet. Thanks to the rest of staff, as well, who helped with the vaccines and payment. Everything went very smoothly.

We have been taking our dog for nearly one year (dog is less than one year old). She finally had a medical emergency that required immediate treatment and we were told there was no way to see her until the afternoon of the next day. We're seeking a new veterinarian in the area who is willing to see urgent patients quickly. I recommend you find a different veterinary clinic in the case that your pet has an urgent issue since Union Vet cannot be relied on.

Sadly this place has just gone downhill over the years with a firm focus on money over much else. For the sake of the clinic, I hope they see new leadership soon.

It is so hard to find a vet you can trust which we all know. One of the biggest gripe everyone ALWAYS has with vets are their costs. No matter where you go, every single place is expensive! We know this! I truly don't think it's fair to expect anywhere in DC in general to be anything close to affordable BUT quality is the concern here. I have a six pound chiweenie mix who has been seen here multiple times and I have yet to have a bad experience.

The staff is kind, they always answer my questions and they truly listen to me when I have concerns. I brought my dog in for a dental cleaning and his teeth look outstanding. I have called them who knows how many times with food questions, every time my dog pukes and so much more. They always work with you to get your dog seen ASAP if needed. I think they are great - yes spendy but overall great.

Today was my first visit after moving into DC. I was surprised at some of the reviews about the front desk crew as I thought they were extraordinarily polite and accommodating. The clinic is very efficient and the doctor is knowledgeable and they have a large staff to get you in and out. My situation is a bit complicated but the Vet was very helpful. I will return a few more times and see how it goes. So far, so good!

Don't listen to the people that have rated this place 1 Star, you can see that they're idiots. This Vet is everything, I used to go to a corporate one, the difference is huge. You get a very human/animal treatment. Totally recommend!

If you work on, or near, Capitol Hill, then this vet is NOT for you. After rescheduling my dog's appointment three times, I was finally able to get my dog scheduled for an appointment. I took time out of my work day to accommodate their schedule. I had a work meeting that caused me to be 13 minutes late to my dog's appointment. When I got to Union Vet and called to have them come out and get my dog, they told me that I was past their 10 minute late-period and that by being 3 minutes past their window meant I would have to reschedule my dog's appointment--absolutely no exceptions.

I asked how long they were planning on being with my dog, if being 10 minutes late made the appointment void? My dog only needed to get her vaccine shots renewed. I asked if there was an appointment scheduled for after my dog, wondering if they could get her in without affecting another person's schedule. They said there wasn't another customer but it was besides the point, I was late and there was nothing they could do.

I find it very very odd that this veterinary office, which is located on Capitol Hill and markets itself as friendly for people with busy schedules who live on the Hill, has only a 10 minute grace period with absolutely no exceptions. Schedules on the Hill are dynamic, taking time out of someone's work day to bring their dog in is not common.

I will tell every person I run into on Capitol Hill NOT to take their animal to this clinic if their time or the value of being a customer means anything to them. Sure, the location of the clinic is convenient, but the management is tragic. Union Vet Clinic is not the only place on Capitol Hill to take your animal, and I will be happily taking my dog to one of their competitors.

This place is a money pit and doesn't really care about the animals. My dog needed three shots the Vet recommended doing two and coming back in two weeks for the third. I did that but after the two weeks, he had to have an exam again ($$) even though he was seen two weeks prior. So needed up paying for the exam and the shot but wasn't told an exam was needed until it was time to pay. I only go there unfortunately because there isn't another in the area.

This place was our go-to while we lived on The Hill around 2015. We moved away, came back.and the place went way downhill. Could never find test results - I had to bring them their own results and quote them from their own notes each time I visited. Chronically misdiagnosed my dog and ordered expensive tests through multiple visits over the same issue for several months. Drove my dog 30 miles away to another vet.and the problem was solved with a month's worth of antibiotics and vitamin C. This place is overwhelmed, understaffed and borderline dangerous to your pet.

We will never come back, really bad experience. Way overpriced and the way of upselling additional meds is just outrages. We're away overseas and came back after 4 years and we definitely regret to have done so, never again.

Do not waste your time here, go somewhere that cares about you as a customer and your pets health, and not just the money they can drain from you! I'm definitely happy to pay for quality service, but Union is far from it. They are extremely unreliable and unprofessional, and you can never get a person to answer the phone. They charge an exorbitant amount for everything they do, far beyond that of comparable (and better) vets in the area.

Thanks to COVID, you obviously can't go into the exam room with your dog, which is to your detriment, as they regularly perform 'tests' and procedures that aren't necessary which they don't bother to request it permission for beforehand, and then bill you after. They refuse to dispense routine prescription refills without an 'up to date' exam, even though my dog just had a comprehensive exam three months prior, making it clear they just want to extort another excessive exam fee from you, and don't care about your dogs health or symptoms being alleviated quickly.

They finally offer an app, until you download it, and find that they offer absolutely no digital services or conveniences, and all the app tells you is to call their front desk, who never answers the phone to begin with. Don't waste your time and frustration at the expense of your pets health and your wallet, there are so many better practices who employ reasonable and caring people!

I can't express how glad I am that I found this vet. I had a horrible experience at another clinic so it was so refreshing to go to a vet like Dr. Yimm who reassured me and was so thorough in his care of my cat, especially during COVID. Can't recommend this place enough!

If you care at all about your animal DON'T bring them here! I thought that paying twice the amount as other places for my dogs neutering ($490 with microchip) would ensure a great experience, but sadly I was wrong. When I brought my dog home after his surgery, he was whining in pain the whole ride home. Once I got into the house, I realized they LEFT THE CATHETER IN his arm from the surgery.

I called Union Vet Clinic and told them. to the response of "oh shit". They said I shouldn't take it out at home and that he should be brought back to the office. (Mind you I live in NW DC and it's over 30 minutes one way.) I check the time and ask if they will still be there in 30 mins which they said they would be. I arrived about 10 minutes before their 8pm closing time.

The tech took my dog to remove the catheter, and I asked to speak to the Vet about what happened. I wanted to have my dog checked over once more by the Vet since the Tech's negligence caused me to have to come back. I also had some follow up questions about his medication and about some redness I observed on the area. Being a concerned first time pet mom, I wanted to be certain he was checked after being under anesthesia.

On top of this, the front end staff was extremely rude and unprofessional. They told me that the Vet was on the phone and could not come down to assess my pets condition. (Outside due to Covid restrictions) They told me to leave and he would call in 20 minutes. I reminded them that the only reason I was there was due to their mistake, and that I wanted the Vet to look him over before I drove another 30 minutes home.

The staff turned all the lights in the business off and locked the door. After calling multiple times and insisting that I speck with a Veterinarian one finally came outside around 8:15pm, (25 minutes after I arrived) I spoke with the Office Manager the next day who offered me a $75 credit "in case I should return for an appointment". NO THANK YOU!

I wouldn't put my pet into harms way for $75. Couldn't be more disappointed - not only in the business and unnecessary money/time/energy spent that day, but in the LACK OF COMPASSION the staff at Union Veterinary Clinic had for me or my dog. #dobetter

Greedy. Non-transparent & unprofessional. My dog was diagnosed with Heartworm, and they REFUSED to give me the test (Microflaria (MF) count) results. I actually paid for TWO Heartworm tests & they STILL wouldn't give me the results. I asked FIVE TIMES.They kept telling me I had to schedule another appointment to get the results. When I finally got angry with them, and told them I was changing vets, they sent me a scan of the results but DELIBERATELY blanked out the actual count data that I requested.

Some vet clinics have a reputation for scamming people for Heartworm diagnoses. Union Vet Clinic appears to be one of them. Avoid them. Just Look at the Yelp data: Union Vet Clinic has consistency gone down in ratings over the last year. Too bad I can't leave zero stars.

This business made an appointment two weeks out to bring my sick dog in. I wanted to know how much I would be charged and got so many strange responses then was told there are 5 different receptionists answering me. They then attacked my lack of proper "vocabulary" to describe his symptoms, and then canceled my appointment within one workday of the actual appointment for simply asking to know my charges previous to being charged.

Now my dog will not get the help he needs. It just felt very strange to not be allowed to ask how much I'll be charged. Terrible customer service. I've never seen such unprofessional treatment and lack of care for a sick dog.

I've had excellent visits with Dr. Motorola and Dr. Gross who have treated my dog as their own and highly recommend their veterinary care; however, I have had unpleasant experiences with their front desk in scheduling appointments and billing, particularly with Bryce. Be more customer friendly.

Union Vet is the absolute best. They are consistently kind and patient with our nervous dog, Sebastian. We have seen every vet who works there and they are all amazing. Dr. Stenner in particular is great - she is reassuring, explained things carefully, and was amazing with our anxious dog who doesn't love tight spaces or strangers. I like her more than my own doctor!
