Edna Valley Veterinary Clinic and Surgical Services is proud to serve the Central Coast for all of your veterinary needs. Dr. Alwen and his team are committed to providing our patients with the highest quality care. Using advanced techniques and diagnostics, each of our patients receive the personalized care they require.
When your pet reaches 7 years of age they are considered a senior. Pets are living longer thanks to advances in veterinary care, diagnostics, and earlier intervention. But the key to enjoying our "senior" pets lies not only in extending their life span, but in helping them enjoy their later years to the fullest.
Advanced surgeon Dr. Jeff Alwen came to the San Luis Obispo area with his wife Rosanne and two sons late in 2002. With 25 years experience, Dr. Alwen offers advanced surgeries such as orthopedics, TPLO (Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy), Arthroscopy, MRI, neurology and oncology, in addition to quality general health care.
The rupture of the cruciate ligament is the most common knee injury in the dog. This injury has two common presentations. One is the young athletic dog playing roughly who acutely ruptures the ligament and is non-weight bearing on the affected hind leg. The second presentation is the older, overweight dog with weakened or partially torn ligaments that rupture with a slight misstep. In this patient the lameness may be acute or there may be more subtle chronic lameness related to prolonged joint instability.

Editing for today's experience. Love Dr. Alwen, Kendra, and Donna. Unfortunately, there are new staff that have zero customer service experience over the phone. If the woman who answered the phone today was my first interaction, I would take my pets elsewhere. Meeting a customer's frustrations with excuses doesn't make that customer feel heard or valued.

This is my second interaction with the same individual and I dread calling in case this person is going to answer the phone. The 3 people mentioned in my review do take incredible care of all my animals. 18 years of care and I've only just begun to think i shouldn't make the 30 minute drive based on one of their staff.

My mom has taken her pets to here for years. They are very nice and know exactly who your pet is when you call to make an appointment. And we were just getting her deaf Chihuahua's clipped.

We can't say enough great things about the Edna Valley staff and Dr. Alwen! Our dog Cedar tore her ACL and after checking vets in Santa Barbara where we live, Edna Valley's prices couldn't be beat and they got her in for surgery within days and it was very comforting knowing she wouldn't need to wait weeks for surgery. After surgery they were very communicative and even when a complication came up after surgery Dr. Alwen made room in his schedule the next day for our dog, Cedar and even answered emails after hours about our concerns. We are so grateful for the awesome staff and Dr. Alwen. We will recommend them to all of our family and friends. Thanks guys! - Allie & Michael

Dr. Alwen performed TPLO surgery on our Labrador that was marginally successful. She was seen at UC Davis for a rehabilitation evaluation six months afterwards. They assured us the surgery was well healed, despite the advancement of her arthritis that the surgery was meant to slow. It was difficult to communicate with Dr. Alwen after the surgery regarding activity limitations and physical therapy. If possible, I would advise going to the orthopedic board certified veterinarians in Ventura. The staff was always friendly and accommodating.

Dr. Alwen is extremely competent in all aspects of veterinary care, from routine visits to complicated surgeries. I know that when my dog is in their care, she will receive the best care from Dr. Alwen and each of his staff. I'm always advised of the choices and risks involved in each procedure, what my dog's quality of life is expected, and an estimate of costs involved. We are truly fortunate to have this veterinary team in our local area.

This is the clinic that takes care of my dog, Lexi. They did her spay procedure. I was nervous because of the Covid-19 protocols. Drop off and pick up curbside. Lexi didn't know any difference and behaved as normal. I figured it was a great example. At pick up the Vet came out and debriefed me on the procedure and after care.i thought that was a nice personal touch. It was unexpected but so greatly appreciated. Well done Edna Valley!

Incredibly kind staff that helped my kittens hip surgury go very smoothly. They were the perfect mixture of professional and friendly. All of the staff have a genuine love for all animals and it is very apparent. This is my vet until I leave the area. 5 stars.
