Services
The BIRD Clinic Veterinary Corporation was originally founded in 1987 by Larry Nemetz, DVM, as a specialty veterinary practice dedicated to advanced diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of medical conditions in ONLY avian patients. Our mission is to provide excellent avian veterinary care for the birds of our clients and those of the many vets that refer to The BIRD Clinic.
Pre-purchase Consultation - Dr. Nemetz offers counseling on "Selecting the correct bird for the specific home". New Purchase Examination - An "insurance policy" to be confident your new avian pet came to you in good health. Annual Health Examination - In a goal to monitor and maintain the good health of your bird and prevent disease before it manifests itself in a more serious state.
Dr. Nemetz always loved birds as a child, conceived the idea of an avian practice while in veterinary college and then founded The BIRD Clinic originally in Santa Ana, CA in 1987 and then moved to a purpose built facility in Orange, CA in 2007. Only a handful (8) of clinics in the United States limit their practice strictly to pet bird medicine and are located only in California, Oregon, Florida and North Carolina.

If I could I wouldn't even rate this business. I had the worst experience at this place. Here is why. I discovered a large open bulge on the back of my macaw "Dakota". I called multiple vets and this place was the only one who agreed to see my bird. I didn't know what was happening. We had never noticed that large open brown on the bird.

I was desperate for answers. Dr. Nemetz came into the exam room, picked up my macaw and checked the back of his neck. He said it was a large tumor and needed to run tests to find out more. He said it would cost about $1,708.22 to run test and get started. I asked him if there were other options because of the cost. He did not like my question. He told me he had passed up his lunch in order to see my bird.

He was so rude and cold hearted. I went there to get my pet some type of care and instead I got treated like an idiot and did not receive any treatment for my bird. He charged me $160.00 for the visit and didn't even bother to clean the wound on my bird. I walked out of there in total shock and disbelief. I cried the whole way home which was 30 miles away.

Maybe he was having a bad day and I got the short end of the stick but to charge a fee and not even attend to the injury is simply ridiculous. In my opinion he is in this business for the money. He doesn't care about the animals only his wallet.

Obviously I should have checked your Yelp page before scheduling. As I was driving home I thought, maybe it's me. maybe I'm being oversensitive. Lol. I literally laughed out loud when I got home and read these reviews. dozens of people calling you out for the exact same bullshit attitude you showed me. It's not okay to be abusive to pet owners for having the audacity to seek care for their animals.

You treated me like a hostile witness, trying to "poke holes" in my story and find fault instead of actually listen. I'm sure you are a competent avian vet, so it's sad that innocent animals are suffering and not getting the treatment they need because you have personality issues. Read these reviews and take it to heart. Get some therapy.

Work on being more understanding and empathetic. You realize that literally the first thing you said to me was, this bird is probably going to die soon so are you sure you want to treat him? The words used when I left were not strong enough. Seriously. Get help.

I had been looking for a real avian vet for over 5 years and could only find vets who advertised that they took care of birds, too. I found out that I knew more about what a parakeet's poop should look like than they did. My parakeet, Skye, would still be here today had I found Dr. Nemetz. He is direct in his approach, which I believe some find off-putting, but he is very knowledgeable.

He has helped me learn more about my bird, what is healthy to eat, and how to keep her healthy so she can live a long life. My girl has lost weight and is active and happy again. If you are willing to listen and put your ego aside for the health of your avian friend, this is the vet to visit. Yes, the first encounter is pricey but the subsequent follow ups are not. I spend a lot on my dog to keep her healthy and fit, why not my budgie. In addition, the office staff is wonderful.

I highly recommend Dr. Nemetz because he really focused on avian care. Truly knows his stuff. Takes the time to explain to you to share knowledge on caring for birds. Also willing to teach you how to apply needed medicines. It is above average charge but worth the money!

Dr. Nemetz knows what's up when it comes to birds. Our Yellow Nape Amazon and African Grey are in such good hands with him. He clearly cares about birds and this is much more than a business operation. The facility is top notch, clean, and Mandy is friendly and helpful, always. If you're looking for top of the line avian care, look no further than Dr. Nemetz's The Bird Clinic.

Critical: Professionalism, Quality Horribly place! Dr. Nemetz is a flat-out jerk and does not know how to communicate with people. People keep posting the honest reviews because he has the negative (true reviews) removed. I am sure it costs him to remove. If I could put negative stars, he/ she (Dr. Nemetz) would get -5!

18 years ago we found a young very sick Mourning Dove in our back yard. It was our good fortune that we found Dr. Nemetz. Jesse has been with us since then and Dr. Nemetz has been wonderful. This includes a major surgery when Jesse ingested some toxic metal. Highly recommend!

If I can give a negative star review I would. I've never met anyone so heartless. I called in for an emergency for my 8 year old daughter's cockatiel who was suffering from egg binding. The douche of a "doctor" tells me they are closing and he can't help. He talked to me as if I was stupid. you turn me away after I begged for help as my daughter's bird was suffering. my daughter crying in the background.

How can you go into a profession to help animals when you turn around and not help. Granted I understand your "hours" but come on it was only 11:45am! Yes they close at 12pm on Thursday! And right before the holidays! Have some compassion, isn't that what you went to school for? Quite disappointed. This bird was more than a bird, it was my daughter's companion and helped with her anxiety.

Due to your lack of compassion, I had to drive 40 miles away and our precious bird didn't make it. I called nearly every clinic and no doctors available to help. So now my daughter has to deal with the emotions of losing her best friend. great job "doc" people like you don't deserve to treat our loved ones. Steer clear of this place. read the reviews. I'm sure he is only after $$$

The doctor is very knowledgeable. I first went to the bird doctor nearer to my house which was in Rancho Cucamonga. One of our canaries broke his leg so we were told by Alta Rancho that the bird was gonna die and they couldn't do anything so we had to put him to sleep. A week or 2 later We took our other canary in to the Bird Clinic because the same thing happened from the aluminum band.

The bird vet was very professional and helped with everything! Blood tests medicine and even nutrition recommendations. I feel like our other bird could've been saved if we brought him here! But still grateful our canary is still alive and healthy thanks to the BIRd clinic! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM for all your bird needs. He has many canaries of his own and is very professional

Dr. Nemetz is very clearly educated in his field. He's knowledgeable, kind and makes one feel at ease. He explains everything thoroughly and gives the best recommendations he can. His staff are much the same, attentive and kind. My pigeon was checked out in a jiffy and I came out feeling reassured he had received only the best care. : Will be recommending to friends and family.

Hi I brought my cockatiel Tommy for some concerns with his wings. My overall experience the bird clinic was a pleasant one. I learned a lot from the veterinarian there. I would highly recommend anybody that needs care for their pet birds.

As other reviews have stated, this is the absolute best place to bring your birds. I drive almost and hour to bring my birds here. Dr. Nemetz knows exactly what's he's doing, shares as much knowledge with you at every appointment, and so incredibly skilled at handling my two sun conures. He explains everything in detail, anatomy, different tests he offers, the importance of a good avian diet, and diseases.

He has made time to call me and explain results from tests and also to check on my birds after receiving treatment, which I appreciate so much. The environment is professional, organized and clean. Mandy, the vet is also so nice and helpful. What a great team. I will continue to come here for as long as I have birds!

Took my conure here and omg the doctor was amazing! The front staff was so professional it was a great experience. Little story bought my bird from a breeder who burnt his crop with doctors recommendations my baby is healing and is expected to make a quick recovery. Hand down best avian doctor now he's our go to!

My sad experience with Nemetz is that I had a seriously injured canary (approx. 1 year old), who suffered over three days and died. Nemetz wasn't available to immediately see my canary (broken leg)) and when he did have time to see her, the charges ran over $800. Furthermore, the clinic is hot and stuffy, and you have to wear a mask. I felt ill listening to his "advice", which I followed to the best of my ability. Be careful leaving the parking lot, the traffic is dangerous and no pet is worth a car accident!

My baby cockatiel "Mr. Humphrey" had a bad fright due to the earthquake early this morning. Being a first time bird mom I was concerned. But the tip off was seeing a pen prick of blood surfacing on his wing feathers later in the morning. The location were my husband adopted Humphrey was closed, but I came across The Bird Clinic online. At this this time they stated they were by appointment only.

But thank goodness they were able to take us in. I am grateful for this doctor and finding him. He gave us peace of mind and great knowledge on how to further benefit our baby. So thank you, and to your staff for giving us your time and knowledge for our sweet baby boy "Mr. Humphrey".

Sadly this vet is just a bad egg. Pun intended. I only wish I had read the Yelp reviews prior but when you're worried about your bird, you get in wherever you can. I would like to spare you a trip and a load of cash. I walked out the door only paying $200 for an exam (could have been so much worse if I hadn't listened to my instinct on this guy) Vet told me that my bird was overweight (told me 120g's)and calcium deficient.

This scared me as she has laid eggs and I always worry about being egg bound. He said she needed a $480 X-ray, and depending on the outcome, egg removal surgery. Mind you, by the time I got here, she was acting totally normal again so I turned down his offer. Had I been more fearful, I would have done it and unnecessarily had her put to sleep for a procedure she didn't need.

Side note: while he is speaking to me, he has my bird in his hand and is gesturing around as she flails panicky. That all occurred last week. Today I got her into Greek & assoc In Yorba Linda just to see what to do about her being overweight. Turns out the physical exam shows she is not overweight and they weighed her at 112g's. Also said there is no reason for me to think she is calcium deficient based on her diet.

I paid $75 for exam AND leg band removal. So happy for a great outcome but wouldn't trust Dr Nemetz with my birds as he is more into making money than being of service to the pets we love so much. Wherever you go, listen to your instinct - not all vets have the best intentions.

Pippy, my cockatiel, and I are grateful to Dr. Nemetz for saving Pippy's life as she had toxic metal poisoning. Pippy is now 18 years old and squawking as much as usual. Thank you Dr. Nemetz

You do NOT want to take your birds anywhere else! We in SoCal are so fortunate to live so close to one of, if not THE best avian vets in the country. Dr. Nemetz has been at the forefront and led advancements in avian medicine for decades. You can find a tremendous amount of info online about that so I'll let you see that for yourself. I've been taking my birds to Dr. N. for over 15 years.

He provides the highest level of care, diagnostics, and has access to the most advanced technology. Other vets that treat birds can't even come close to what he can do and I've met a few that can even misdiagnose your bird due to lack of expertise and that can be deadly. Not only does Dr. N. have the credentials, but he genuinely cares about the health of your birds. Now, he may not have the best bedside manner and can be a bit brash, but never mean.

He is nice, just straightforward and honest. So if you're sensitive about that, I'd sincerely recommend putting that aside for the well being of your birds. He will not do you wrong. Dr. N's prices are fair for what he does. I don't think anyone would want to go to the cheapest doctor for their own care, and I certainly wouldn't for my birds.

I can tell you from personal experience that his top priority is the health of your birds, and NOT money. There are many times where he could have done tons of additional tests and diagnostics but took the sensible, affordable route when it made sense. Medical care is expensive folks, you just feel it more when insurance isn't covering it. Dr. Nemetz is good people. I am so thankful for him, he saved my bird's life and I wouldn't take my feathered kids anywhere else!

Dr. Neimetz knows birds, but what he charges is ridiculous. I paid almost $500 for a chicken that had to be put to sleep. Paying $200 to put down an animal is absurd. After my expensive experience there, I called Magnolia Bird Farm and asked about an alternative avian vet. They said they don't recommend Dr. Neimetz because he overcharges his clients. As an alternative, they recommended Dr. Greek in Yorba Linda. I took a chicken to see Dr. Greek and was very pleased with his knowledge and fees--very reasonable.

I'm very confused on why this clinic has a 4 star rating and very concerned that this guy is a "doctor. This guy only cares about taking your money. Does not care at all about the bird. Our bird was taken to him after a nasty unfortunate accident with one of our dogs. This being our first bird we have no other idea or something to compare the situation to.

I will admit that the condition was bad and when he was taken in, he did nothing but to try to pump fluids. This guy kept on treating him only for shock! Completely disregarded that there were puncture wounds on the bird. Kept saying that the bird was too in shock to even take xrays. He wanted to keep the bird for 48 hours for "observation", when everyone knows that after business hours there's no one in the facility to take care of the pets.

Not only was the care subpar, this charlatan has some outrageous price. What kind of doctor charges to set up a new patient chart? Or charges per injection? Don't believe me? I'm posting the estimate when he was trying to take advantage of the situation and what we paid after declining hospitalization. Unfortunately, our bird didn't make it. Fortunately he was able to come home to die instead of dying alone.

Dr. Niemetz was fantastic. I took our office pet (from my old job) here many times. Piccolo was comfortable with this doctor and he was very knowledgeable. If I had a bird I would use this vet again. He knew a lot about the particular breed of bird brought to him (Military Macaw) and you can tell he was passionate about his job. The only thing I didn't particularly like was his suggestion to cut the identification band off the birds foot. In hindsight I wish I didn't accept his suggestion and I wish I had slept on it because I would not have cut it off if I had to do this over in the future.

Dr. Nemetz is one of the best, plain and simple. He's straightforward and not afraid to tell you where you're mistaken or doing wrong by your bird. He's saved both of my birds' lives, and for that I am immensely grateful. While the costs can add up, particularly if your bird has ongoing medical issues, money is not the issue here--you get what you pay for, which is top-notch avian medical care. It's worth every penny, and if you love your bird, Dr. Nemetz will do his best to help. Remember that he is a specialist and has state-of-the-art medical technology, which you can't get anywhere else.

Dr. Nemetz has been seeing my babies for over 10 years. He is the ONLY avian veterinarian that I trust & will NOT take my babies to anyone else. Yes, he does charge a little bit more than other veterinarians; however, you do need to realize that he's an avian specialist. Dr. Nemetz is very straight forward & won't sugar coat, which can lead people to believe he's being condescending & talking down to them. He's a very logical thinker & will state facts, which most people don't want to hear.

In the society that we live in today, being "politically correct" has made people overly sensitive & getting their feelings hurt too easily! Yes, he can work on being a little more tactful, but others can work on not taking things so personal as well. If you want your babies to live a long, healthy life, then go see Dr. Nemetz. He is the BEST in this field!

Ive said it a few times. yet I will say again because I believe in Dr. Nemetz and his bird practice. I have spent thousands on all my parrots and every single penny is worth it. Dr. Nemetz is an avian specialist. this is the key word I feel most people are forgetting. He is a "Specialist" therefore you can expect to pay more, and receive better care.

I have been going to him with my 5 parrots for over 18 years. He is nothing short of amazing. He is the sole reason I do not leave California. He has NEVER spoke to me in a condescending manner and if he ever did it is because he is concerned with me and possibly a bad habit that im doing to HARM my parrots life. i.e. feeding snacks. etc. I truly feel that he is misunderstood.

This man is not our friend, this man is our veterinarian. there are no discounts, he does charge for everything. but this is a business first and foremost. He genuinely cares about his avian patients and strives for the best, be they in medication, digital x-rays, endoscopic surgery, whatever. He has personally saved 2 of my parrots lives thorough his "Medication" which I picked up at Costco! and he compounds the pills and creates heart meds for both of my parrots.

This is heart medication that humans take! There is No "special" recipe. these are PRESCRIPTION medications he personally compounds for my parrots to extend their lives. It is legit heart meds that we get prescribed and pick up at Costco. all the other fees are just basic business practices that all doctors charge for but do not tell you. and this man is an open book. Mandy at the front is AMAZING! She's always in a good mood and always gives me updates on my babies if they are spending the day with them.

She is a true asset to this practice as well. He is truly a one of a kind avian Doctor with the upmost knowledge on avian health. If you take your parrots health seriously -he is the only avian veterinarian to go to. If not then go spend less at a regular veterinarian and get so/so treatment from a Doctor that isn't that knowledgeable in avian health care. You wouldn't want to get your brain operated on by a podiatrist would you?

I accidentally stepped on my cockatiel, broke her wing, bruised her leg so bad and my bird's life is in danger. My bird was in a terrible shocked and I can hear my bird crying. I brought her to Dr. Nemetz and he saved my bird. He is a very knowledable avian doctor and I can see his concern and care for the birds. It has been over a month ordeal for me and now my bird is still recovering but she is now OK. Thanks for Dr. Nemetz. For the expense, it is not cheap but the life of my bird is more important than money. I want my bird to live.

Our fid "Artemas" was a hours away from leaving us. We could see his life rapidly leaving his body. It was a day of panic and despair that my wife and I will never forget. All Dr. Nemetz did was save our baby's life. Dr. Nemetz knows and truly cares for birds of all types. He made it clear within minutes of us getting Artemas checked in that Artemas was his client, not me, not my wife.

He is direct, frank and he will scold you if you do something you shouldn't be doing with your bird. On the other hand there is the Dr. Nemetz who truly cares for his clients. He personally hand fed, medicated and monitored our bird during business hours then at 10PM and then again at 6AM, seven days a week for five weeks. So the reviews from people who think the know more about parrots than a man who has dedicated his life to caring for these creatures or want to those who walk in and want to buy formula from what is essentially a bird hospital are laughable.

If you think you know more, treat your bird yourself. Wait, please don't, you will cause it's demise. Additionally, if you need bird formula, go to Petsmart, Petco, Omar's or other bird-specific stores, they have hand-feeding syringes there too. If you want a Veterinarian that has decades of experience and will do his best to care for your bird, visit Dr. Nemetz.

I had a wonderful experience seeing Dr. Nemetz. He is sharp, clearly a leader in his field and takes his profession very seriously. After consulting 2 other DVMs about my budgie's health problem with diagnosis TBD, I was referred to Dr. Nemetz. Going to The Bird Clinic vs. going to another clinic that sometimes treats birds was like the difference between night and day.

He determined that my girl is actually a boy (!) and that he has testicular tumors. Dr. Nemetz was able to administer an injection of Lupron at his hospital which he explained has an 85% success rate in sending these types of tumors into remission. He mentioned he has to obtain Lupron from a human hospital & divide it into bird-sized portions, so I believe this is a treatment I could not have gotten at just any clinic!

He is a wealth of knowledge and spoke with me at length about the details of the treatment as well as a more ideal diet for my bird's needs. I really appreciate that he was also willing to advise on the day-to-day factors to help ensure long-term health for my bird. Thank you for giving me answers for the first time since this health issue began for my budgie and professional treatment to repair the issue.

The Dr is so wonderful, he is very intelligent and on top of current avian research. He knows his stuff and as a bird mommy, I can't ask for more. He's good at handling the birds, he's very good at blood draws. Both my sun conure and green cheek didn't even flinch when he drew blood for labs.he take his time with each individual pt making sure that they are each properly taken care of. He's good at educating his fellow bird owners.

The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Do expect to wait at his office for a little while, it's only him and his 2 assists, but the way he cares for the bird and the time he takes with each one is well worth the wait and also the price, as avian vets are always a bit expensive.

I was totally impressed. I read some of these reviews that gave him a bad score and I have to disagree with them. He is a wealth of knowledge -if you take that as arrogance than you should probably be looking in the mirror. He is a one man show! Nemetz is there for your bird! His prices are up there but when you take on a pet, you take on a financial responsibility.

I brought my parakeet in today because he has been sick for a month. The Doctor was so much help. He explained everything to me and broke it down so much he even mapped out on a piece of paper. He was thorough and reassuring. I will definitely come back. PS YOU CANT PUT A PRICE ON A FAMILY MEMBER!

Dr Nemetz was really nice, I've no idea what the other reviews are talking about. He took his time explaining each step of the check up and even some extra things. He was also very polite to the office staff, which is always a plus. Most importantly, he took excellent care of my babies. He's very knowledgeable and I know my birds are in good hands. His services are expensive but so are ALL medical services! No complaints at all on my end :
