Dr. Foss knew from an early age that he wanted to take care of animals. Born in Arizona, he moved to Idaho to complete his undergrad education at U of I and then earned his doctorate from Washington State University Veterinary College. He eventually moved to the gorge and built the Hood River Alpine Veterinary Hospital.
We recommend yearly wellness exams for the same reason your doctor recommends them - if you can detect a problem in its early stages, it's more likely to be treated and resolved with less expense, less difficulty and better success. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Perhaps you recently welcomed a new four-legged addition to your family. Or, maybe you're just seeking a Veterinary partner who will treat you and your pet with the respect, compassion and individual attention you both deserve. Whatever the reason, we invite you to come see what we're all about. Call us today, or better yet, stop by and visit with us. Our doors and our arms are always open. See you soon!
Please set up an appointment for an exam with a doctor. From there the doctor can guide you in the best diagnostic or therapeutic path for your animal and provide you with an estimate. Due to the complicated and individual nature of each animal's problem, we cannot give estimates over the phone. Inability to urinate or defecate Ingestion of poisonous foods, substances, plants, or bones. Lack of Appetite, Repeated Vomiting, Diarrhea, Not Drinking Water, or Unproductive Retching.

We have a horse that is over 30 yrs old and unfortunatly we will have to put him down because he just can't walk anymore. Him living to that age is a testment to the way my wife cares for her animals and this is not a choice easily made. she has been calling Vetrinarians near and far and no one will do it for every excuse imaginable. But alpine said they would for a rediculas fee of over $1000.

It's pretty bad that you have to beg to do something you dont want to do but then be taken advantage of in you time of need is pathetic way to be as a business.
the vetrinary business really is not about helping people and their animals, its purely about money. they should be embarassed.

The Dr's Foss are great people, I've know Dr Mike over 35 years and he's super knowledgeable and kind. Dr Rachel really knows her stuff too and glad to see her on board.

I drive 1 &1/2 hours to bring my horse to Dr. Mike Foss and his staff. They are all terrific, treat my horse and myself with professionalism and kindness. Dr. Foss always tell me the truth about what he sees and how he would like to treat my horse, and why. I trust his opinion, and follow his directions on the care of my horse. He likes horses and that also is important to me.

These people know how to treat you and listen to you. I brought my cat in after having a less than desirable experience at a vet in The Dalles. They listened to me, and treated me with dignity and respect, saw my cat immediately and scheduled the appointment. These people are wonderful and care about what they do.

My dog had an emergency wish I had chosen this place, (my parents take their animals here) instead made the wrong choice to go elsewhere and deeply regretted it. This place is polished, professional, RELIABLE, TRUSTWORTHY, Communicate, maybe spendy but honestly you get what you pay for and you get the quality service here. On top of that the front desk girls are always on top of it and friendly.

UPDATE 09/17/2021: Received a letter from Michael A Foss "DVM" that states we should establish care at another hospital. No call, emails or online submissions have been returned from their office. But they send a letter AFTER we have already established care elsewhere. Another local vet office has told me many people have quit this place and hope it turns around.

I think I agree with them. I hope it turns around. UPDATE: It's been 6 days and still no returned call from Michael Foss or anyone from that office. I've sent 2 emails and called multiple times. What a dumpster fire this place is. Started taking our recently adopted dog to this place back in August of 2020. Since then we have seen 3 different vets because his usual vet is "unavailable".

But today there's only one vets name on the door plaque. weird. Back story. Our dog has a few health/allergy issues and is on a special diet BUT getting this office to write any type of perception for his food is like pulling teeth. Our first prescription was written by Michael Foss on 2/8/21 for "Hydrolyzed Diet, via royal canine". Now fast forward to today, the last straw.

We had our food supplier reach out to the vet to get authorization for our dogs food and in return it was denied by Cassi. The supplier said Cassi said no because the prescription is for a Hills brand dog food and that he has never been on royal canine. Our dog has been on the same Royal Canine food for about 6 months now. We tried calling the vet's office to request a prescription 2 times.

After being told "we don't write paper prescriptions" from Cassi (which is illegal) We made the drive to the office to see what was going on. We were not greeted by anyone but welcomed with a eye roll from Cassi and another unmasked receptionist by the name of Haley. When we let them know why we were there Cassi replied "I haven't even been able to get up, our doctor is in a surgery and I need approval.

What spot number are you in? You can wait outside." After not liking her response We then requested our dogs full record and all previous prescriptions. She confirmed and We stepped outside. After waiting outside their office for about 10 minutes We heard the front deadbolt latch shut. WHILE WE WERE WAITING OUTSIDE! Finally after about 10 more minutes a tech named MaryJane came out with the prescription we requested and our dogs file.

While looking over the prescription we found an error and asked for it to be changed. While MaryJane went inside to fix this we started looking over our dogs file. Things looked normal until we got to page 5. We had to go into the clinic and ask the two very rude receptionists who's signature was on this note. They confirmed it was their vet. Look what Michael Foss D.V.M wrote, "3/27/21 - very impatient for prescription".

This is very comical to me. Because for a vet office who should actually care for pets and owners you sure do have a weird way of showing it. Your team sure is unprofessional, slow to respond and really a dumpster fire of a clinic. If there's any advice I could give anyone, it would be to steer clear of this office.

Incredible! Recently moved to Hood River and they made the transition to a new vet so easy for us! Very friendly and professional. They are the first vet we've been to in the last year of the pandemic that actually has the Vet come out to your car as well to update you and answer questions. Really impressed and grateful!

Took care of my four legged best friend from cradle to grave. Would be 5 stars except for cost and wanting it paid up front.

They made time in their booked schedule to see my hamster, who had a severe break in her hind leg, and stayed late to do surgery on her and make sure she was able to go home that night. All of the staff here are wonderful!

The staff is so friendly and kind. I had just moved into town and my dog needed emergency attention. I called them and they took her without hesitation. My family will be using them as long as we live in Hood River, and recommend them to everyone we know. Thank you for all you do Alpine!

We had an equine emergency while at Joe Graham Horse Camp and brought our horse in on Sunday of a holiday weekend. The on-call vet was fantastic. She was thorough and very up front about the situation. Her calm demeanor was a welcome influence. If they are this wonderful during an emergency, I'm sure they are great all of the time.

The entire Alpine staff gives such excellent care to our animals. We have a troublemaker lab, and they have taken care of everything from basic check-ups and vaccinations to removing a rock from his stomach in emergency surgery. I have called on weekends through the answering service with questions and have been able to talk over them with our vet.

I have called on weekdays to be given an appointment on the same day. The staff is so friendly and genuinely cares about the animals, taking the time to know their names and personalities. I love the practical approach to veterinary care - I never feel like suggestions are unnecessary or pushy. Alpine is also very reasonably priced compared to the other practices in the area, however we would still be loyal customers simply because we value their animal care. Thanks for taking care of Boone!

Alpine is by far the best clinic I’ve been to. The care the doctors and staff give are far superior to every other clinic in the gorge. My dog is not a very well behaved patient but the doctors are able to work with him in a manner that’s caring and safe for everyone. It is obvious here that these people love their job and have a passion for all animals, even the naughty ones like mine.
